The 52nd Annual G7 Summit
From June 15 to 17, 2026, Evian-les-Bains, France, hosted the 52nd annual G7 Summit.
The Council of the European Union compiled the 12 key takeaways that resulted from the 72-hour summit. Through deliberations, we can see a clear structural transition presented by the G7 leaders. There is an emerging emphasis on transactional diplomacy, supply chain security, and regulatory frameworks designed to navigate a constantly evolving global landscape.
International Security
International security dominated the opening session with Iran, Ukraine and the Indo-Pacific at the top of the agenda. However, Evian’s summit focused on traditional defense priorities while incorporating non-G7 powers. Notably, the inclusion of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was crucial to the working session entitled Building Peace and Security for Ukraine and Europe. G7 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and increase their deliverables to the country’s defense industry. Supporting Ukraine further, more restrictive Russian sanctions are on the table.
U.S.-Iran Relations
The summit was heavily shaped by a major diplomatic development: the U.S.-Iran Memorandum of Understanding which intends to prevent nuclear escalation, open the Strait of Hormuz and ease maritime sanctions. As detailed by the Prime Minister’s Office of Japan, the agreement was officially welcomed by G7 leaders on their opening day working dinner.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi strongly backed U.S. diplomatic efforts. Takaichi insisted that the highest priority must be given to securing the immediate passage of all commercial vessels stranded inside the Persian Gulf as humanitarian concerns are imminent. Furthermore, Takaichi invoked Japan’s history as the only country to suffer atomic bombings in war, calling for coordination between the G7 and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Collaboration efforts would be geared towards permanently preventing Iran’s from obtaining nuclear weaponry.
The French host structure expanded the working sessions to include non-G7 powers such as Egypt, the UAE, and Qatar in efforts to create direct dialogue on long term maritime safety.
Economic Advancements
The economic highlight of the Evian Summit was the official release of the Declaration on Securing Supply Chains for Critical Minerals. The declaration’s main objective is to limit the G7’s dependency on external actors for rare earths and permanent magnets. To achieve a 60% decrease by 2030, the summit introduces several structural changes to their critical mineral industry. In coordination with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the International Energy Agency (IEA), the G7 is launching multifaceted mechanisms to verify the origin and transparency of mineral supply chains. The framework begins with lithium and nickel as its first two pilot minerals, with an explicit mandate to add five new critical minerals to the tracking system each year.
The preexisting Critical Minerals Resilience and Production Alliance has been strengthened to aggregate demand and mobilize public and private financial capital. During the 3-day summit, the Alliance pledged to catalyst $19.2billion in critical minerals projects, across 69 partnerships.
Technology Development and Health Networks
The Summit provided a collaborative space for emerging economies (i.e., Brazil, India, Kenya, South Korea) to participate in the deliberations. On the sidelines, U.S. President Trump met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting India’s expanding role under the current leadership and pointing to potential areas of closer economic cooperation.

Post Covid-19, the G7 has furthered their commitment to localizing contact tracing and rapid diagnostic deployment.
As artificial intelligence and generative systems transition from novel applications to core infrastructure, the G7 advanced regulatory guidelines. With the youth population becoming increasingly present online, leaders sought to implement digital platforms that are “safe-by-design” and include default privacy and age restriction settings. Sites would target systemic risks associated with conversational AI, specifically addressed algorithmic feedback loops that can expose minors to age inappropriate or harmful materials.
Final Issues
The final notable declaration resulting from the Summit is regarding migrant smuggling. G7 intelligence and customs agencies will now integrate data systems to track the financial flows underpinning human smuggling syndicates. Preventative measures also include monitoring digital infrastructure, such as social media, that advertises and coordinates illicit smuggling operations.
Unprecedently, such a G7 declaration calls for the deployment of targeted sanctions and other legal restrictions against individuals and entities involved in human smuggling. This includes freezing criminal assets and disrupting underlying economic incentives.
